Melvin Thomas Hatfield, 64, of Pineville, WV passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, WV. He was born on December 31, 1957 in Welch, WV a son of the late Milton Thomas and Laura Bell Cline Hatfield.

Rose was loved and is remembered by several generations of nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends. A graduate of St. Peters North Side and St. Benedict Academy, Rose worked at Western Union during World War II where she would later meet and marry Charles. Her Catholic faith was the core of her beliefs and of her life choices.

At Larry's request, there is no visitation or services. Dainer Brinkley Mullens, 75, of Oceana, WV, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Stonerise, Beckley, WV. She was born on December 21, 1946 in Herndon, WV a daughter of the late Arnold Jackson and Reba Brown Brinkley. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two sisters Norma Amburgey and Patricia Vance, and three brothers Robert Brinkley, Beryl Brinkley and Harold Brinkley. Graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, October 14th at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV with Rev. Randall Topping officiating. Pallbearers will be Greg Mullens, Steven Mullens, Daniel Mullens, Bryan Cooper and Avon Crawley.

Ultimately, Goldwater's poor polling numbers degraded any dependence Johnson might have had on Kennedy as his running mate. Hubert Humphrey's selection as vice president then became a foregone conclusion and was thought to strengthen Johnson in the Midwest and industrial Northeast. Passing the civil rights bill in the House required getting it through the Rules Committee, which had been holding it up in an attempt to kill it. Johnson decided on a campaign to use a discharge petition to force it onto the House floor.
He became the Senate Democratic leader in 1953 and majority leader in 1954. In 1960 Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination for president. Ultimately, Senator Kennedy bested Johnson and his other rivals for the nomination, then surprised many by offering to make Johnson his vice presidential running mate. He then announced an immediate unilateral halt to the bombing of North Vietnam and announced his intention to seek out peace talks anywhere at any time. At the close of his speech he also announced, "I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President". In October, with the ever-increasing public protests against the war, Johnson engaged the FBI and the CIA to investigate, monitor and undermine anti-war activists.

Johnny found his way to the private sector at International Paper in Georgetown in 1955 and then on to Westvaco in 1959. That’s where he had his most fun and achieved the most professionally, yucking it up with the fellas and ladies in The Zoo and eventually retiring as Chief Electrical Engineer in 1993. Funeral services will be 11 AM, Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. McCollough’s family will receive friends 5 to 7 PM Wednesday at Williamsburg Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held 3 PM, Sunday, October 9, 2022, at McClary Cemetery near Kingstree. Family and friends are invited to gather at Millwood Community Center following the service to share memories and a meal.
